NEWS TO KNOW

BOARD SELECTS SUPERINTENDENT

Dr. Carl Shultz
The Board of Education selected Dr. Carl Shultz to fill the Bedford Public Schools' Superintendent position! We look forward to welcoming Dr. Shultz to our Bedford family beginning January 8, 2018!

Cough Drop Parent Letter

January 3, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Effective Monday, January 8, 2018, it will be necessary to complete a “Medication Administration Form” (including physician’s signature) in order to dispense cough drops or lozenges to students during the school day.

In accordance with the Michigan Department of Education, all over the counter medications, as well as prescription medications must have a physician’s signature in order to be given to students at school. Due to the fact that there is a “Drug Label” on the packaging of most cough drops, they are considered an over the counter medication. The risk of choking from a cough drop is greater than the benefit they provide.

Please remember that if you wish to have cough drops or lozenges dispensed to your child while at school, they must be brought into the Health Room by a parent, along with the completed “Medication Administration Form”, which is available on the BPS website under the Health & Safety Department. Please DO NOT allow your student to carry cough drops or keep them in their possession during the school day.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,
Karen Weis and Mindy Klawonn

Where's the Bus?

Fleet viewer display with phone and link to viewer
FLEET VIEWER NOW AVAILABLE FOR BPS BUSES!
Bedford's Transportation Department has installed Samsara GPS units on each of the buses in the fleet. Use the Fleet Viewer to watch as the bus nears the stop! No more standing in the rain or cold waiting for the bus to get there! Families can stay warm and dry while tracking the real-time location of their bus. They will know that once the bus passes a certain street, or enters their neighborhood, that it is time to head out to the stop so they are ready when it arrives!

HOW TO ACCESS:
1. Go to the Samsara Fleet Viewer Link

2. You will see a map displayed. In the upper left hand corner is says, "Search 48 vehicles." Click your cursor there to enter the route number of your bus. For example: "rt 23." You can also use the name of the route the elementary kids use, for example, "Star" if you child rides the Star Bus.

A dark gray circle means it is parked. A green arrow means it is travelling and will be moving along the road in the direction of travel. In both scenarios, the bus is identified by the route information associated with it.

3. Save site as a bookmark on your phone for even more convenience!

Note: Bus route numbers may have changed and now match the slot numbers in the bus parking lot at Bedford High School/Junior High School. Route stops may have changed. To see the most up-to-date information, please refer to the online Bus Route listing.

NOW ACCEPTING ONLINE PAYMENTS

My School Bucks logo and link
MySchoolBucks Online payments are now being accepted for the 2017-18 school year. Chromebook insurance ($30) payments for Bedford students in grades 4-12, including all of the associated technology permissions, can be done completely online through My School Bucks Link. Insurance payments for families with 3 or more students are capped at $90.

Students that have the required insurance payments and permissions completed will be able to pick up their Chromebook during the  elementary school Open House on August 30th about when 4th and 5th grade students can pick up theirs. (Any student unable to make those dates/times will receive their Chromebook on the first day of school after all the related permission forms are done and insurance payment made.)

Optional messenger style bags are also available for purchase ($25) for those students that don't want to carry their Chromebook in their book bag.

Please note: You must use the MySchoolBucks WEBSITE to conduct your transactions for Chromebooks and other items we are currently accepting payment for (for example, high school parking passes, and, coming soon, Latchkey payments). The MySchoolBucks mobile app you might see on your phone ONLY contains the company's meal program which Bedford Public Schools does not use (we use Mealtime Online at www.mymealtime.com for deposits into food service accounts).

ATHLETIC FORMS & PAYMENTS

FinalForms will be used to complete all of the required online
athletic forms and as the online payment system for all levels of
Bedford Public Schools athletics at the  Athletic Forms site.

A step-by-step Parent Playbook on how to use FinalForms is available to download.

ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR ONLINE FOR FREE & REDUCED SCHOOL MEALS

Free and Reduced meal applications can now be completed online! You can go directly to My Mealtime to set up an account (if you don't already have one). Paper applications are also available in all school offices.

Create an Online Application for Free & Reduced Meals: Click the "Free & Reduced Applications" button and follow the wizard to create your application. You will need your Student's First Name and Bedford School ID number. You will receive notification regarding the determination of the application within 10 business days.

Last year's participants will continue to receive program benefits until Oct. 13th. There is no deadline for application. Families can apply at any point during the school year. All information provided is confidential. Further instructions can be found on the Food Service page of our website.

Please call the Food Service Director, Meaghan Eckler, at 734-850-6127 or Food Service Secretary, Tammy Newton, at 734-850-6126 if you have any questions about this process.

We encourage you to complete an application, even if you choose not to use the benefits yourself, since the number of students eligible for benefits also is used to determine other services and funding, such as the funding our schools receive through Title programs.

WATER QUALITY SAMPLING AT BEDFORD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Bedford Public Schools is undertaking a voluntary and proactive survey to ensure a safe drinking water supply in our district facilities for our students, staff, volunteers and guests. We are taking water samples to check for lead in our drinking water. While we are under no legal requirements to undergo any type of testing for this, in the aftermath of the Flint water crisis, we felt it would offer some comfort and peace of mind to assess our facilities and to address any areas of concern that might be revealed as a result of this testing process.

More information about this process is available on our Water Quality page.
